On the Floor
I’ve always used photography to serve as a record of my relationships, and use habitual work to create series of work as shifts happened around me through my husbands military deployments, moves, and my pregnancy.
In March of 2020 living in Southern California at the start of Covid 19 Pandemic, I started a self guided Artist Residency in Motherhood.
For over two months I structured my days around my studio time. My then 18 month old daughters nap time, and used the toys and objects she played with as an inspiration, rather than an obstacle in my work.
While she napped, I picked up what she had left on the floor, would photograph them, make digital negatives. And create cyanotype contact prints. Each day she would leave around twenty toys scattered around the house.
On the floor is a culmination of this repetitive work, and shows an average of what three days of nap-time toy prints would be.
